Urban regeneration project focuses on the integrated revitalization of Sibiu’s historic core, a UNESCO-protected area renowned for its medieval fortifications and vibrant public squares. Recognizing that the city’s central areas have become increasingly dominated by motorized traffic and fragmented commercial use, the study aims to reclaim the public realm for its citizens. By bridging the gap between historical preservation and modern functionality, the project seeks to transform Sibiu into a “15-minute city” where essential services, culture, and nature are accessible to all within a short walk or bike ride.
The proposed interventions move beyond simple aesthetics to address deep-seated functional and environmental challenges. Key strategies include the implementation of a pedestrian-priority zone in the historic core, the introduction of a climate-resilient green infrastructure, and the systematic removal of architectural barriers to ensure universal accessibility. By integrating high-retention vegetation and shaded “cooling anchors” within the dense urban fabric, the project mitigates the urban heat island effect while preserving the authentic character of the city’s iconic squares, such as Piața Mare and Piața Mică.
Ultimately, this project serves as a strategic blueprint for the long-term sustainability of Sibiu as a living cultural organism. It balances the demands of high-quality tourism with the needs of the local community by fostering a diverse mix of local commerce, crafts, and social infrastructure.
