The Modernization of the Fortress Square in Deva is a landmark urban regeneration initiative designed to transform a former asphalt parking lot into a vibrant, multifunctional public space. Situated at the foot of the historic Deva Fortress, the project serves as a pilot intervention for the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative. By integrating values of sustainability, aesthetics, and inclusion, the design creates a cohesive urban plaza that respects the site’s significant archaeological and cultural heritage while providing a contemporary stage for social interaction and cultural events.
The architectural solution focuses on high-quality materiality and environmental resilience. The existing asphalt is replaced with a high-performance composite concrete pavement that ensures durability and a uniform aesthetic across the square. Due to the sensitive archaeological nature of the site, all structural interventions are limited to a maximum depth of 30 cm.
The landscape strategy emphasizes an autosustainable green infrastructure, featuring a mix of relocated trees, new plantings, and mobile steel planters. These mobile units, equipped with integrated wooden seating, allow for a flexible spatial configuration that can adapt to various urban scenarios without the need for complex irrigation systems.
Central to the project is the enhancement of the urban microclimate and community well-being. The square is equipped with energy-efficient LED lighting, including ambient fixtures integrated directly into the pavement to provide safe and subtle orientation at night. Public amenities include a dedicated 109-square-meter playground with certified safety surfacing, as well as minimalist urban furniture crafted from 100% FSC-certified wood. By prioritizing universal accessibility and pedestrian-centric design, the modernization of Deva Fortress Square establishes a new standard for sustainable urban development in the West Region of Romania.
