Strategic Vision and Regional Role
Fly Far Airport Bistrița is a preliminary architecture and urbanism concept for a regional airport and strategic NATO base located in the outskirts of Buduș, Bistrița-Năsăud. Developed for FAR Foundation S.R.L., the project envisions a multimodal transport hub for North-West Romania that combines commercial passenger aviation, cargo logistics, and aeronautical maintenance. The infrastructure is designed to meet NATO interoperability standards, serving as a strategic asset on the eastern flank of the Alliance. This dual-use facility aims to integrate civilian and military functions within a cohesive, modern architectural framework
Technical Infrastructure and Functional Clusters
The master plan covers a total land area of 871,600 sqm and features a 2,500-meter long by 45-meter wide runway capable of operating Code 4C aircraft, such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, as well as military transport planes. The southeast cluster includes a 7,700 sqm passenger terminal designed with efficient flows to ensure a maximum walking distance of under 300 meters. To the northwest, the project features a dedicated logistics and maintenance zone, including a 4,800 sqm cargo terminal and four hangars totaling 13,600 sqm. The architectural design incorporates sustainable features, including extensive rooftop solar panel arrays and green “living” roofs.
Operational Safety and NATO Integration
To achieve NATO-grade operational status, the project integrates critical infrastructure such as a centrally located Control Tower (TWR) for full runway visibility and a Firefighting Unit (RFFS) with a response time of under three minutes to any point on the runway. Advanced navigation systems, including ILS (Instrument Landing System) and PAPI, are specified for night and low-visibility operations. Security is reinforced through a double-secured perimeter and dedicated platforms for Quick Reaction Alert (QRA). Supporting infrastructure includes 52,400 sqm of passenger parking and 15,700 sqm for heavy cargo vehicle maneuvers.
Environmental Stewardship and Economic Scope
The design specifically addresses the proximity of the “Laleaua Pestriță” (Fritillaria meleagris) natural reserve by incorporating sound barriers and advanced wastewater management systems to protect the habitat. Implementation requires a Zonal Urban Plan (PUZ) and environmental approvals for Natura 2000 sites. The total estimated investment for the project ranges between 143 and 218 million EUR, covering the terminal, runway, cargo facilities, and technical systems. Visually, the terminal is defined by a rhythmic colonnaded facade and floor-to-ceiling glazing, creating a transparent and luminous gateway for the region
